Eric Schmidt Google Keynote At Mobile World Congress

March 09 Comments

If you have an hour spare and want to see Eric Schmidt’s keynote at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, check out the below – with subtitles in case you miss any of the words.

The best bits come from 35 minutes in – question time. Interestingly, I have faced some of these questions (or assertions) before, ironically from the same people who ask Eric those in this video. I am asked about this stuff for an opinion rather than a corporate statement – but here, Schmidt clarifies Google’s standpoint which is worth watching if you are even remotely involved in commerce, communications or technology in general. By the way, if you are a telco operator and you are wondering whether Google are a threat – go to 52 minutes in and listen carefully for 30 seconds. It should now be abundantly clear what you need to do to compete. Understand your subscribers.

Eyehotel.tv – Life Is An Audition

March 09 Comments

Last year I came up with an idea for people to pay for hotel stays with their privacy. It’s called Eyehotel.TV and is a social experiment to see whether real reality TV is more compelling than the manufactured versions we get on regular television. It is an experiment to see whether there is demand to be seen in public, and for the public to really see reality. The holding domain is here.

The shell outline is: To provide the public with access to an Eyehotel.TV room. Any member of the public can book a stay. There are no auditions.

An Eyehotel.TV room costs £0.00 + privacy.

Everything that happens in the Eyehotel.TV room will be filmed at the request of the resident.

This footage will be streamed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week and broadcast to the public on Eyehotel.TV who can interact with people in the rooms and share the experience.

Hoteliers get paid at least the rack rate and can remain anonymous if desired.

Eyehotel Integrated Brand Plan [Final.docx.jpg

There is quite a bit of background work done on this already, covering the revenue streams (from premium subscription and product placement through to a new type of advertising called ‘adver-rooms’), technical architecture, branding, marcoms, hotel outreach, legal necessities and operational requirements. The tech team are lined up, there is a hotel in the pipeline and even the PR strategy is in place – but to get this concept off the ground, there needs to be some money and time assigned to it.

As an experiment, I have decided to let this concept out into the market to see what happens. . I predict there are various outcomes of doing so:

  1. Nothing – the idea sucks and it should be left alone
  2. Others are inspired by the concept and make it happen independently of those who have assisted on this already
  3. Someone wants to run with the project and would like me and the people I have worked with, to be involved in some way
  4. The whole thing happens without any knowledge of this announcement

I am fine with any of these 4 outcomes. If you choose option 3, please contact me by clicking here.

I would like to thank Tayo, Pete, Lee, Debs, Kevin, Oliver, Jane, Ondi and KDD for their work on this to date – without whom, none of this would be possible..

So here it is, Eyehotel.TV – it’s ours :)

All Hail The Mighty Apple Ipad. Not.

March 08 Comments

The above was aired at the Oscars earlier. The first official iPad advert! Lovely isn’t it?. I’m a big fan of convergence. Any machine and a screen. But there are 4 reasons why I’m not going crazy about the iPad:

1. The inability to multi-task. I am a productivity fan so this is a deal breaker

2. The lack of camera. This is a jaw-dropping exclusion – hell, even the low end phones come with cameras now!

3. Lack of Flash. So, no streaming videos….right…guess that’s still a novelty right? Er – no

4. No USB port. Well…there is if you use the adaptor but really?

Up until Mobile Me, I thought Apple could do no wrong. Then they proved they could and now there’s a small shiny object of desire that I don’t dribble over…
