The first thing young America women do in the morning? Check Facebook, according to a new social media study from Lightspeed Research commissioned by Oxygen Media. 40% of the 1,605 U.S. adults polled describe themselves as “Facebook addicts,” with 34% checking FB as soon as they get up. Other interesting findings:

• 26% of women 18-34 get up during the night to check text messages, and 37% have fallen asleep with their smartphone in hand.

• 63% use Facebook for career networking, but 42% think photos of themselves ‘visibly intoxicated’ are okay;

• 32% think photos of themselves or others making obscene gestures is appropriate;

• 54% of women 18-24 say they don’t trust Facebook with personal data;

• 56% of Twitter users think its okay to Tweet their current location

• 58% of women 18-34 use Facebook to keep up with their “frenemies”

• 53% are guilty of TMI, posting about their personal problems of the moment

• 85% of women think its okay to post photos of a “girls’ or guys’ night out”

• 72% say they understand that once it’s posted on Facebook – whatever it is – “it will live on forever”

• Women 18-34 are using social networks to gather news and advance their careers, while realizing “their habits are beginning to resemble addictive personality traits, as they continue to share vital information despite the risk to their careers and reputations.
