Norm : The Super-human Anti-change Virus-machine

One of the main reasons people aren’t able to identify and exploit new opportunities, (in their business and personal life) is not due to a lack of desire or willingness to do so, but because of a bigger challenge.

It’s name is ‘Norm’ – this stands for ‘Nothing Original Really Matters’.

Norm is a virus machine that wins hands down over any other virus you can name. Let me prove it to you:

Norm is so effective that most people in the world suffer from it and almost all of them are either not aware of it, or worse, think it’s unavoidable or (in the most virilant form), desirable.

Norm’s machinery has managed to figure out a way of looking like it’s a good option. The ’shrewd’ folk of modern day society, bleat ’stability’ as some form of argument, all the while building Norm’s power and predominance (which, as a happy coincidence, goes against significant economic downturn).

Most challenges of ‘business as usual’ are quickly and efficiently slayed by a seemingly unlimited artillery that Norm provides. Effortlessly.

Even if the ‘new’ is incredible, Norm ensures there is a counter-argument to what it calls; ‘petty optimism’, for instance:

“we make millions so why should we change?”

“re-defining our company would cause so much upheaval, it’s best to leave things as they are”

“we will only get into new stuff if there is a proven case”

“if it’s such a good idea, why haven’t our competitors done it?”

This is the Norm at it’s most powerful.

What most don’t realise is that these are the attitudes that replicate Norm’s effect. Norm WANTS you to do this. Norm makes you feel GOOD when you say this. Norm is most powerful when people find comfort in speaking the virus-machine code as above.

Norm is so advanced that those that question it, are vilified by superiors who are even more infected. Norm has it’s shit nailed down so it doesn’t even need to challenge anyone itself – it just mutates and replicates.

I wish to god we had a silver bullet or a shiny pill to address this genius virus…but I suspect that all we can do is start by realising that Norm exists. That’s the first stage. Meanwhile, go in peace and if you see Norm, tell it I said ‘hey’ and rage against it’s machine as strong as you can..

Best if luck young Jedi.
