In Brazil
In Brazil, some of the biggest artists sell virtually no legitamate CDs.
In Brazil, the band ‘Banda Calypso’ are promoted primarily by ‘pirate’ CDs. They play a over 100 nights a year, marketed by over 10 million CDs sold – most of which are non-official. The bands crew are major influencers, selling concert footage cheap, immediately after a show.
In Brazil, the show Vianna wanted Banda Calypso to play and offered to fly them in. The answer from the band? “no need, we have our own plane”.
In Brazil, 90% of popular artists don’t have record contracts.
But in the western world we covert the old constructs. We critisize those who present a new model. We fear those who challenge. And in return, we are left with un-workable businesses that we justify as much as possible.
