Blyk Is Not Closing: The Facts As Of 13th May 2009

Recently there was some information published that was categorically incorrect.

It’s a shame that some parts of this new media industry seem obsessed with killing the industry itself rather than celebrating brave and innovative business models.

So….here below we have the ACTUAL facts as opposed to the information currently being circulated:

Blyk is expanding, not closing shop… Blyk is looking to evolve its UK operation in line with a global strategy of partnering with operators. We already have an operator relationship in the UK with Orange and we are discussing the next stage for Blyk as an operation and the next stage for Blyk members.

Blyk sees its members as its core asset. It is in Blyk’s interest to look out for its members. In turn, this will allow Blyk to create a global community which delivers personal value for each member.

This change is part and parcel of Blyk’s journey. The MVNO model acts as proof of concept – Blyk needed to build the mobile media model from the ground up with end-to-end control of the network and complete control of the customer/ user experience. This has created a unique competence within Blyk.

As hoped, Blyk’s success in the UK has driven high interest from operators. Partnering enables the Blyk media to gain faster scale globally (in audience) and this is game changing from an advertising perspective.

The key point is this. The model expansion isn’t a ‘scrapping’ or ‘killing’ of any other model.

What they are doing is scaling their model towards other operators who are (unsurprisingly) interested.

Blyk has proved many things since its launch that I am still to this day, honored to have been involved with.

It's called the telephone game. You keep spreading the idea until it changes over and over.
  • not much value here, but i'll comment anyways
  • Thanks for clearing that up
  • Doesn't really help that Blyk's Press email address bounces, nor is there anything on their website press release section regarding a change of direction.
  • Hmm. Saying the MVNO model was intended as proof-of-concept reads like PR Spin to me.

Scale either requires significant cash and political capital to build each market or first-mover operator partnerships/customers.

    I'm happy for them.
  • I agree press email not being working is not a good thing? It still all seems a little suspect as a Blyk user I have not had a brand message for months. Are Blyk saying that as a MVNO the business is not sustainable? For me the answer is yes. This is why they are turning to the larger MNO's to bring the model to their plans. Now I am convinced this is where it will work. What will happen to the Blyk's core asset now? Will we be told to leave or will we be offered a plan on another network?

Still, it is weird, if everything was done 'according to the masterplan' that they announced massive EU expansion on their own MVNO - only to backtrack now and saying it's all good. So part of the noise might be coming from Blyk too. No matter what, I wish them the best.
  • It's like a game of chinese whispers - one person misquotes something and it follows through the whole chain. Doesn't really help that Blyk's Press email address bounces, nor is there anything on their website press release section regarding a change of direction.

Anyway, if you're speaking for Blyk officially and/or are happy to provide attributable comment, I'm more than happy to update the blog post I made earlier. Let me know. Thanks.
